Summary

Superstitions only survive if people believe in them。。。

Renowned academic Dr Sparling seeks help with his project on a remote Irish village。 Historical researchers Ben and Chloe are thrilled to be chosen—until they arrive。。。

The village is isolated and forgotten。 There is no record of its history, its stories。 There is no friendliness from the locals, only wary looks and whispers。 The villagers lock down their homes at sundown。 A nameless fear stalks the streets。。。

Nobody will talk—nobody except one little girl。 Her story strikes dread into the hearts of the newcomers。 Three times you see him。 Each night he comes closer。。。

That night, Ben and Chloe see a sinister figure watching them。 He is the Creeper。 He is the nameless fear in the night。 Stories keep him alive。 And nothing will keep him away。。。

However, every once in a while I pick up a book or one by an author I've seen highly recommended in one of the many bookish online communities that I follow。 Something thematically different than my usual favorites。 A。M。 Shine is one such author。 You may recognize him from his earlier work, The Watchers, which is also on my staggeringly long TBR。 This one took me a minute to get into, as it is somewhat of a slow burner and I tend to prefer a faster pace。 But much like that children's tale of the tortoise and the rabbit, slow and steady wins the race。 This is the story of a pair of researchers, Ben and Chloe, who are hired by an old eccentric to visit the village from which the superstition of a monster called the creeper originates。 They make the trip and are warned off, but allowed to stay for one day on the condition that they conclude interviews by dark and leave the following morning。 Ben makes an earnest attempt at learning the origins of the story from the village folk and feels like he's failed due to the villagers' unwillingness to talk, until he and Chloe are visited by a child as they're getting ready to settle in for the night before leaving in the morning。 The author was really good about including little details, both about the legend and events as they are happening, to tie everything together。 He left no big glaring loose ends。 And if you're a skeptic like Ben and myself, the ending and epilogue are quite satisfying。 My one gripe is that maybe the build up was a bit too slow burning。 There were some slightly creepy things early on, but it didn't get truly terrifying for Ben and Chloe until about halfway through the book。 By then I was definitely on the edge of my seat, right up until we get to the twist。 And at that point, the reader is resigned to their fate same as Ben is resigned to his。 Solid ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ read for me。 Before the twist, it would have been one star lower。 It is well written, but there are some things my brain just isn't frightened by。 So the ending was pretty satisfying。 Was it scary? I didn't think so。 But it was suspenseful and had lots of creepy parts that kept me engaged and rooting for the unlucky researchers。 Highly recommend adding it to your spooky season reading list。Big thanks to A。M。 Shine, Head of Zeus, and NetGalley for providing an ARC in exchange for an honest review。 You can buy The Creeper, by A。M。 Shine on Amazon for a couple bucks, or read it as part of your Kindle Unlimited subscription。 。。。more

I just finished The Creeper by A。 M Shine and this is how much it creeped me out。 Academic Dr Sparling, needs two researchers to help him with his project… He is willing to pay for them to go research a town that has been forgotten by time。 A place so remote no one remembers it's even there。 They are so excited to go, that is, until they arrive。 The locals are not friendly。 They do not want them there。 The duo have things they have to ask and the locals are reluctant to talk about the main reas I just finished The Creeper by A。 M Shine and this is how much it creeped me out。 Academic Dr Sparling, needs two researchers to help him with his project… He is willing to pay for them to go research a town that has been forgotten by time。 A place so remote no one remembers it's even there。 They are so excited to go, that is, until they arrive。 The locals are not friendly。 They do not want them there。 The duo have things they have to ask and the locals are reluctant to talk about the main reason they are there, the creeper。As the town locks itself down as the sunsets, a small child gives them a small clue to what the creeper is… A nameless thing that stalks the streets… Three times you will see him, each night he comes closer… The two go to the tent for the night not believing what they are hearing until they see a figure watching them from them both from a distance… Man oh man oh MAN this one creeped me out to my very core。 The storyline switches between the reclusive Dr。 Sparling and Ben and Chloe。 I really felt this was a clever way to do the story as it gives you a really well rounded understanding of why the whole thing happened the way it did。 The creep factor was definitely there。 4 out of 5 on the creep scale。 It was one of those slow crawls under the skin and once it was there, it never left。 Loved the descriptions of the town right down to the landscapes。 I loved character build ups and how no one was perfect but knew they were flawed。 Genius。 I need to see more from this author now, so this book definitely put them on my radar! 4。5 out of 5 rounded to 5。 I felt there could have been just a smidge more to liven up the horror but all in all, a great read for the spooky season!! The Creeper | AM ShineThe Creeper by AM Shine is a standalone horror novel perfect for the upcoming spooky season。 This is my second book by this author, the first being their debut, The Watchers。 I enjoyed this one a lot more than The Watchers。 The Creeper will quite literally creep you out。 I love the way that AM Shine creates an atmospheric, terror inducing story that makes you want to keep reading while simultaneously checking over your shoulder at that shadow in the corner of the room。 Hist The Creeper | AM ShineThe Creeper by AM Shine is a standalone horror novel perfect for the upcoming spooky season。 This is my second book by this author, the first being their debut, The Watchers。 I enjoyed this one a lot more than The Watchers。 The Creeper will quite literally creep you out。 I love the way that AM Shine creates an atmospheric, terror inducing story that makes you want to keep reading while simultaneously checking over your shoulder at that shadow in the corner of the room。 Historian and archeologist, Ben and Chloe are hired by the enigmatic and suspicious doctor, Alec and sent to investigate the remote isolated village where the superstition and legend, The Creeper originated。 What they find is a closed off community, not welcoming to strangers and reluctant to talk。 The villagers and the doctor seem to fear the night。 Something sinister is going on, but will Ben and Chloe be able to get to the bottom of it before they too become caught in the Creeper’s sights。 I loved the fantastically eerie village setting。 The story felt like it would work well as a movie and it was easy to picture it in my mind as I was reading。 The pace starts off slow and builds tension and then the final half will have you glued to the page as the story races to the terrifying conclusion。 Thank you to Netgalley, the publisher and AM Shine for an arc of this novel。 。。。more

I am a sucker for eerie urban legends, as are a lot of other people。 This features a creeper。 Don't mention him unless you want him to 'creep' closer and closer until you die。 This could be set up to be one of the eeriest things to read in the dark。 It was definitely atmospheric and did succeed in creeping me out every now and then。 Not enough, though, unfortunately。 You spend a good part of the time trying to figure out who the creeper is and don't really get a great answer。 I've seen a lot of I am a sucker for eerie urban legends, as are a lot of other people。 This features a creeper。 Don't mention him unless you want him to 'creep' closer and closer until you die。 This could be set up to be one of the eeriest things to read in the dark。 It was definitely atmospheric and did succeed in creeping me out every now and then。 Not enough, though, unfortunately。 You spend a good part of the time trying to figure out who the creeper is and don't really get a great answer。 I've seen a lot of people say they didn't really like the ending either, it brought their rating down and I agree。 I feel like the pace needed to be quicker and I desperately wished it had been scarier。 。。。more

I absolutely adored The Watchers by this author and was very excited to hear that another book was on the way。 The Creeper keeps in style with being a horror story that is full of unease and palpable tension。 This is much more of a slow burner in comparison to the other book which readers will either love or hate。 I enjoyed the idea behind the book and the power of myths and urban legends and how they're kept alive generation after generation。 The Creeper is a great example of this and frighteni I absolutely adored The Watchers by this author and was very excited to hear that another book was on the way。 The Creeper keeps in style with being a horror story that is full of unease and palpable tension。 This is much more of a slow burner in comparison to the other book which readers will either love or hate。 I enjoyed the idea behind the book and the power of myths and urban legends and how they're kept alive generation after generation。 The Creeper is a great example of this and frighteningly he seems to be very real as out unfortunate protagonists find out。I really enjoyed the concept behind this book but it did leave me with a few unresolved questions with the logistics of a few points。This is unquestionably another brilliant book by A。M Shine who has created another unique and unpredictable story that kept me up reading until the small hours。 This book didn't quite pip The Watchers but still definitely up there in my top reads。 Looking forward to the next one! 。。。more

I absolutely loved this book。 I thought the story was going to be slow as I was about 25% into the book and nothing really had happened。 But then I realized how gripped I was by the actual story。 A fright-fest, it is not。 What it is, is a beautifully written, expertly spun story of folklore, survival, betrayal and revenge。 A few questions were raised that were not answered, but this can be forgiven。 I read before bed and usually only manage a couple of pages but I finished this in record time, s I absolutely loved this book。 I thought the story was going to be slow as I was about 25% into the book and nothing really had happened。 But then I realized how gripped I was by the actual story。 A fright-fest, it is not。 What it is, is a beautifully written, expertly spun story of folklore, survival, betrayal and revenge。 A few questions were raised that were not answered, but this can be forgiven。 I read before bed and usually only manage a couple of pages but I finished this in record time, several 2am late nights happened。 Definitely recommended。 。。。more

It makes no sense。 I mean, why would these men suddenly want to kill everyone and stalk them and all that? It’s not like they rewired their brain? It was too crazy to be even remotely realistic。 It’s clear that they still had some human in them, so why would they then keep killing?? I obviously also hated some deaths that were featured, which also kind of surprised me。 (hide spoiler)] I was just so confused about the ending that it made my rating drop quite a lot。 The last book just blew me away and surprised me, but this one didn’t。 At least not in a good way。 🗺️ The characters🗺️Since there aren’t many characters, I’ll just discuss them in one go。 First of all, Ben。 I’m not sure how I felt about Ben。 His backstory was sort of interesting, but I also feel like we barely know him。 I did admire his loyalty to Chloe, and I really enjoyed reading about their developing friendship。 I however started to get more and more annoyed with his attitude of just denying everything。 It was clear that something was indeed following them, but he refused to believe it and actually actively went looking for the Creeper。 This just annoyed me so much that I honestly started to hate him near the end。 I mostly loved Chloe, she was so badass and quite interesting。 Once again, I wish we’d learned even more about her! ‘Good people see the good in others。 They search for it, even when it isn't there。’ Alec was insanely odd, and I didn’t like him throughout the entire book。 I was kind of hoping for a cool backstory for him, and I definitely thought he’d be the Creeper。 I didn’t like him; he was just so annoying and honestly quite creepy in his behaviour。 I swear he’s a creeper himself, in any sense of the word。(view spoiler)[I wasn’t surprised when he had sighted the Creeper a few times himself, that became quite obvious from his behaviour and general weirdness。 I am however wondering after that end who exactly saved Lara; someone had to have told her to stay away from Alec that night, right? I don’t know, it just feels like a loose end。 Another loose end seems to be the detective; we learned that he has a gambling depth, but we didn’t learn anything else about him。 Will he do anything now that Ben, Chloe AND Alec have disappeared? Will Aoife be okay? (hide spoiler)]There just seem to be some loose ends, and I hate that。🗺️ Writing🗺️The writing style was easy; there were some difficult words, but it was mostly easy to read。 There were only a few small mistakes in the writing, so please contact me Shine if you want to know the ones that I found。🗺️ Overall conclusion🗺️I didn’t really love many characters in this, besides Chloe。 The ending surprised me, but also made my rating drop because it was just so crazy。 The creepiness of the book was good, although I expected it to be even creepier。 I didn’t love this as much as I did the last book, but it was still quite enjoyable。 It was just quite slow this time in my opinion, and the ending was just too confusing for me。 。。。more

Ugh this book。 It was tedious。 Every other sentences was an alliteration。 At first it was nice and descriptive, giving great detail of what was happening but after the first three chapters without let up, it became tedious and gut wrenching。 It's as if the author couldn't describe the people and places on their own and had to rely on other people's thoughts。 It ruined the book for me completely。 Ugh this book。 It was tedious。 Every other sentences was an alliteration。 At first it was nice and descriptive, giving great detail of what was happening but after the first three chapters without let up, it became tedious and gut wrenching。 It's as if the author couldn't describe the people and places on their own and had to rely on other people's thoughts。 It ruined the book for me completely。 。。。more

AM Shine is definitely one to watch if you like modern, intelligent horror。 As with his debut novel, this has an original premise, and drips with atmosphere。 At times, the prose is deliciously macabre and melodramatic – and totally in keeping with the genre。If you haven’t yet read ‘The Watchers’ do yourself a favour and rectify that situation immediately。 Because if you enjoy this one then you’ll love his first novel even more (I did)。

I wasn’t particularly bowled over by The Creeper。 I do love a scary read and the idea of a man you see three times, getting steadily closer each time until he is at your window was a good premise。 It certainly kept me up at night as I stupidly decided to read the book on my own late at night。However, I did have some issues with the book itself which stopped this from becoming a 5-star read for me。 Firstly, it didn’t feel particularly original, not only the idea of an entity you see three times b I wasn’t particularly bowled over by The Creeper。 I do love a scary read and the idea of a man you see three times, getting steadily closer each time until he is at your window was a good premise。 It certainly kept me up at night as I stupidly decided to read the book on my own late at night。However, I did have some issues with the book itself which stopped this from becoming a 5-star read for me。 Firstly, it didn’t feel particularly original, not only the idea of an entity you see three times before it kills you but also the way that the curse spreads via someone telling you about it and the creepy, inbred village who lock their doors at night。 It felt very much like I had read or seen it before。 There wasn’t much about the book that surprised me either - you could see where it was going rather easily。 The only twist I enjoyed was the one right at the end as we find out the truth about The Creeper but even that actually exposed a lot of plot holes earlier in the book and a lot of it doesn’t really make sense with that now in mind。I also didn’t really feel like we got to know or empathised much with the main characters of Ben and Claire。 Other than they study History and Archaeology and Ben has a child, we learn very little about them。 This really stops the stakes from building as they get put into peril later in the plot。 I found that I guessed what would happen to them early on and didn’t really connect or engage with them much。 I think the order of the narrative didn’t help this。 We started with them in the car together talking about the investigation which you didn’t have the knowledge to understand and then alternated between chapters of them meeting the professor and being told about the village。 This didn’t really help to establish the characters or the plot very well。Overall, The Creeper is a creepy read but felt very unoriginal with some bland characters and a twist that left a lot of plot-holes in its wake。 Thank you to NetGalley & Head of Zeus for the chance to read the ARC in exchange for an honest review。For more of my reviews check out www。kindig。co。uk 。。。more

It just gave me the willies。 The "creeps" if you will。 I wasn't fully invested until the 50% mark。 It was slow and lord knows that Ben got on my last nerve! But, holy shit! Once this dang story started showing it's 50 shades of what the hey? I was all in。 What this book has "eventually" is atmosphere。 I must say that I truly hated the last 10% of this book。 No spoilers, but it took my rating down。 No worries。。This author is on my rarified list of author's to read。 Yes, I'd actually spend money to read more from Mr。 Shine! 。。。more

I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review。***I found myself immediately relating to Ben, being confident about school and wondering about others, existing in that space between grad school and my job as a professor。 In those first few pages, I felt kinship with Ben, the lost, poor, struggling academic。 The story is a mixture of creepy and frustrating, but it was interesting to read。 At times, it felt like it was dragging and that it could have been much shorter。 Though, I d I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review。***I found myself immediately relating to Ben, being confident about school and wondering about others, existing in that space between grad school and my job as a professor。 In those first few pages, I felt kinship with Ben, the lost, poor, struggling academic。 The story is a mixture of creepy and frustrating, but it was interesting to read。 At times, it felt like it was dragging and that it could have been much shorter。 Though, I do enjoy the idea here。 。。。more

'The Creeper' left me not wanting to look out my windows。 😅My initial response to the main characters wasn't positive and, to be honest, I still didn't like any of them much by the end but, unlike with most stories, my dislike of them didn't affect my enjoyment of the story。I was quickly hooked by the plot and the story held my interest so strongly that I ended up reading the entire book in one sitting。The story is a nice mix of gothic horror and folk horror that touches on the power of stories 'The Creeper' left me not wanting to look out my windows。 😅My initial response to the main characters wasn't positive and, to be honest, I still didn't like any of them much by the end but, unlike with most stories, my dislike of them didn't affect my enjoyment of the story。I was quickly hooked by the plot and the story held my interest so strongly that I ended up reading the entire book in one sitting。The story is a nice mix of gothic horror and folk horror that touches on the power of stories and the danger of belief。I need to vaguely discuss the ending as it is the only aspect of the story that I have a slight issue with。 When initially reading it, I enjoyed how everything played out。 However, as soon as I stopped to think on it I realised just how improbable and unrealistic it was。 The logistics alone make absolutely no sense。 That said, I'm willing to 'just go with it' in this situation as I enjoyed the book too much to care about whether the climax/twist actually makes practical sense or not。Thank you to NetGalley, Head of Zeus, and A。 M。 Shine for giving me a free digital copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more
